Joey, I've watched hundreds of high school and WNBA games in my former career as a sports writer, and I can tell you the athleticism in the WNBA does not come close to "mirroring" high school teams. The better (not necessarily best) kids are much quicker, stronger and faster, and can jump much higher than the overwhelming majority of the WNBA girls. That said, though I'd never spend a penny on a WNBA game for entertainment purposes (I would, if say, my daughter wanted to go), I hope they survive so young girls can have something to aspire to.

There is a demographic for the wnba, while I dont watch it I am sure alot of young aspiring females do who want to be pro ball players. The over all basketball enthuist watches the wnba. The wnba in essence would be more successful in europe because they appreciate at a more team oriented game. Americans are a star driven country, give me glitz and glamour. The wnba does not offer that all of the time, they offer a sound basketball product that revolves around family an a team oriented atmosphere. It might not ever be on par with baseball or basketball or even the nba but it will be around for a while longer and will make money and maybe not as much as mens basketball but it will give people a career making great money doing something they are passonite about. While the nba might have stars and all this money, atleast this leauge and these players play for more then a max contract, they play becasue they actually love the game. Not saying all nba players dont love the game, I am just saying how many of these guys would be playing this game these days if there was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.....consider the mls for a example about that.

The WUSA and the ABL never had the backing of a dominant pro sports league such as the NBA. If the WNBA didn't have Stern helping them out than the league would be out of existence too.

The failures of the WUSA and ABL? They lasted a combined 5 1/2 seasons. The WNBA is starting its 12th. It's past that point.

I think I found your new writer ... there's a hilarious article on the WNBA on PlayersVoice. No one wants the WNBA to succeed ... until they start wearing shorter shorts and tighter tops. Men rule this here sports world!
