Mater Dei’s Barkley Top ’09 Prospect

Matt BarkleyLast week, Rivals.com, one of the premier sources of college football recruiting, listed Santa Ana Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley as its number one prospect in the nation for the 2009 class. Barkley, who became the first junior to become the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2007, passed for 3,560 yards and 35 touchdowns as a junior. The Santa Ana native comes from a long line of Trojans and has already committed to the University of Southern California.

California, Oregon, UCLA, and Notre Dame, were all schools at the top of his list, but in the end, he went with Pete Carroll and the Trojans.

What is interesting to note about Barkley is the fact that he will not only have to live up to the USC quarterback legacy but he is already living up to one at Mater Dei. Former USC Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinartwas a star for Bruce Rollenson’s Mater Dei Monarchs back in 2000. Former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan also starred for the Monarchs. So, Barkley knows a lot about living up to legacies.
