Post-Game Report: Angels vs. Blue Jays (7/5/08)

by Los Angeles Angels

John LackeyIt was too little, too late for the Angels in tonight’s game. John Lackey wasn’t at his best tonight, and the Blue Jays’ bullpen held off a 9th inning rally from the Halos, as the Jays held on to beat the Angels 7-5.

Lackey wasn’t terrible tonight, but he wasn’t too good either. Big John pitched 6 innings and gave up 6 runs (5 earned) while striking out 7 Jays during Saturday night’s game, and suffered his 2nd loss of the season. On the other side of the ball, Roy Halladay gave up only 2 runs in 7 innings and won his 10th game of the season.

The bats were out in Anaheim tonight, as the Angels pounded out 11 hits against Blue Jays pitching. The problem for the Halos continues to be their lack of hitting with runners in scoring position. The Angels also had an uncharacteristic 4 errors in tonight’s game (3 fielding and 1 throwing).

Top 3 Angels performers:

1) Vlad Guerrero hit his team-leading 14th home run of the season in the 4th inning, on a ball that was right around his shins. Vlad continued his recent hot streak, going 2-4 while driving in 3 runs for the Halos.

2) Chone Figgins showed signs of breaking out of his recent slump, going 3-5 with a double and a run scored in tonight’s game.

3)  Howie Kendrick went 2-4, including a single in the 9th that drove in a run and kept the late rally alive for the Angels. Kendrick, who also had a stolen base in tonight’s game, is now hitting .321 on the season.

Jeff Weaver of the Game: Tonight’s Jeff Weaver goes to Mike Napoli. Napoli went 0-3 with a strikeout, and also had a throwing error and a passed ball in tonight’s game. Napoli’s batting average fell to .204.

Play of the Game: Howie Kendrick drove in Garret Anderson with a single in the 9th inning that couldn’t have fallen any closer to the right field line. Kendrick’s hit made the score 7-4 and kept the rally going for the Angels.

What to look for next game: Jon Garland continues his quest for his 100th career win and his 8th win of the season. Jon is currently 7-5 with a 3.99 ERA. He’ll take on Jays’ right-hander Jesse Litsch, who is 8-4 with a 3.69 ERA in 17 games this year.
