The San Diego Padres cut ties with the future hall-of-famer and all-time saves leader two months ago. But while he will no longer play for the Friars, it is still widely believed that Hoffman still prefers to play for a Southern California team after spending 15 ½ of his 16 big-league seasons in San Diego.
The fact that the Angels replaced their own record setting closer, Francisco Rodriguez, with Colorado’s Brian Fuentes suggests that the Halos are out of the running for Hoffman. That leaves the Dodgers as the only remaining legitimate contender from Southern California. The Dodgers are also a likely destination, as they look to replace Takashi Saito and buy more time for closer-in-waiting Jonathan Broxton.
If the Dodgers are unable to bring Hoffman to Los Angeles, than it appears as if his most likely destination is Milwaukee. According to multiple sources the Brewers are preparing to extend him a formal offer as well.
