Angels Agree to Multi-Year Deal With Santana

The Angels signed Ervin Santana to a long-term deal on Saturday. The Los Angeles Angels and pitcher Ervin Santana have agreed to a four-year extension, according to SI.com’s Jon Heyman. The club also holds a fifth year option for 2013.

Per club policy, no financial terms were announced, although the deal is speculated to be worth around $30 million, which does not include the fifth year option, believed to be at $13 million.

Santana, 26, bounced back from a horrific 2007 (that saw him demoted to AAA) to pitch incredibly well in 2008. The right-hander finished 2008 with a 16-7 record, a 3.49 ERA, 214 strikeouts and just 47 walks in 219 innings of work.

“I’m very happy,” Santana said. “I like to be an Angel.”

As long as Santana holds true to his 2008 form – which, by all accounts, he should – then this is a great deal for the Angels. They have locked up a young, potential ace for their staff for the next (presumably) 5 years at a very cheap rate.

“We just felt comfortable with Ervin, his ability to win games and represent the ballclub in a positive way,” said GM Tony Reagins.

There has been no word yet on an extension for staff ace John Lackey, even though he’s been quoted as saying he’d like to sign an extension before the 2009 season starts.

UPDATE 1:40 p.m.

The Orange Country Register’s Bill Plunkett has confirmed that Santana’s deal is 4 years, $30 million with a $13 million option for 2013. The deal also has a $1 million buyout for 2013, should the Angels decide not to exercise the option.

Santana, Saunders and Weaver aren't going anywhere for awhile... they're all under team control for a couple more years.

But it's always nice to have some assurance.

I'm really glad they got a deal done with Santana. Lackey is in the final year of his contract so they needed to guarantee at least one of the Big Three (Lackey, Saunders, Santana) would be playing in LA past this season.
