Jered Weaver pitched dominantly against the Red Sox.
In their first game back since the tragic loss of young right-hander Nick Adenhart, the Los Angeles Angels took on their postseason nemesis Boston Red Sox and came out on top by the score on 6-3. Jered Weaver, who was very close to Adenhart, pitched beautifully in memory of his friend, going 6.2 innings, giving up just 4 hits and 1 run (unearned), while striking out 8 hitters.
The Angels, obviously playing with heavy hearts, scored 3 runs off Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield in the 3rd inning, then got 3 more off reliever Justin Masterson in the 7th. Howie Kendrick and Jeff Mathis had 2 RBIs each, with Torii Hunter and Chone Figgins driving in the other 2 runs. The Halos also showcased their wheels on Friday, stealing 4 bags off Boston pitchers (2 by Abreu, one each by Figgins and Kendrick).
Thoughts from the game:
- The love among teammates is an amazing thing to behold. Both Jered Weaver and Torii Hunter paid their respects to Adenhart by visiting his picture on the center field wall. An awesome sight.
- The Halos really need to work on hitting with RISP, especially with 2 outs. If they continue to have a hard time, this is going to be one loooooooong season.
- Jered Weaver looked fantastic tonight. He threw a lot of pitches (as always), but I haven’t seen him this dominant since 2006 when he first came up. Could he be this year’s Santana/Saunders?
- The bullpen needs to solidify a little bit.
