Game 7: Mariners 3, Angels 2

85140724OG027What should have been an offense-driven battle turned into a surprising pitching duel, and the Seattle Mariners outlasted the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday afternoon. Shane Loux made his first Major League start since 2003, and pitched very well, going 5.1 innings and giving up just 2 earned runs while striking out 2. Scot Shields was slapped with the loss after he committed a throwing error that let the winning run score in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The Halos couldn’t get anything going offensively against Mariners’ starter Carlos Silva. They were held to 2 runs on just 7 hits against the M’s right-hander. Torii Hunter did manage to hit his 2nd home run of the year – a towering solo shot in the 6th inning off of Silva.

Thoughts from the game…

  • Shane Loux really impressed me today. He got into some jams a threw a lot of pitches, but definitely got the job done. He’ll play an important role over the next month.
  • Mike Napoli looked like he just missed a couple of pitches, and was held hitless. If he can get his bat going consistently, he’ll gain a vast majority of the playing time over Jeff Mathis.
  • Bobby Abreu has been heating up quite nicely over the last 3 or 4 games. He’s looking good at the plate and in the field.
