The Lakers’ Pau Gasol is one of those players, who usually doesn’t have a lot to say. He has very few noteworthy quotes and hardly says anything that is the slightest bit controversial. But yesterday, the Spanish big man broke out of his normal routine, by criticizing the Lakers’ offensive strategy:
“I wish we would take more advantage of our height and the inside game, because it’s pretty effective. It’s unfortunate that we don’t recognize it enough,” Gasol said, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.
“It’s frustrating because we lose games,” Gasol said, according to the report. “I don’t mind when we win, because the bottom line is, I want to win. But I feel like we have an advantage, and I’m effective, we should stay with what works and what’s effective and not get away from it. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense.”
The way the Lakers are playing it has become quite clear that Gasol is correct in his assertion that he deserves the ball more, particularly in the second half. So far in the Western Conference Finals, the seven foot power forward is shooting 62.5 percent from the field. In comparison, his teammates have posted underwhelming shooting percentages. Kobe Bryant is shooting 45.9 percent, Derek Fisher is shooting 28.6 percent, and Lamar Odom is shooting 34.5 percent.
In the fourh quarter of Game 4, Gasol took just four shots and rarely even touched the ball. However, the Laker guards hoisted 31 3 point field goal attempts and made merely nine, a 29 percent shooting percentage.
Something tells me Pau could use a few more touches.
