For many years, the NFL and NBA Draft have been held in New York City at locations such as Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden. But according to All Headline News, both drafts could be headed west to Los Angeles:
The NFL and NBA drafts may soon see a relocation to Los Angeles, according to Chief Executive Officer of the Anschutz Entertainment Group Tim Leiweke.
Leiweke, who spoke with Bloomberg, has confirmed that the city will be pushing forward with attempts to bring football back to LA, including shooting for a Super Bowl.
Should the drafts move to Los Angeles, the Staples Center would likely be the venue. Owned by AEG, it’s the location of both the LA Lakers and the Clippers.
Finally, AEG will be making an additional push to acquire the NHL All-Star game, according to Bloomberg.
The NFL draft has been a staple of league business since 1937. It has been traditionally hosted in the Madison Square Garden, though has also taken place in the Javits Convention Center.
Last season, it took place in the Radio City Music Hall, and has not left New York City since 1965. It was around 1980 that television coverage of the event took off, and the event gained a cult-like following of NFL fans.
I absolutely love this idea. It would give another city, such as Los Angeles, the opportunity to host the draft, instead of New York City. Also, LA has a very diverse fan base. There are New York transplants, Chicago transplants, Philadelphia transplants, etc. All of them have maintained roots with their respective teams. So if the drafts were held hear, it would give more fans of the different teams a chance to see the event. What are your thoughts?
