Pressure
The pressure to win the AFC West without Marcus McNeil and Vincent Jackson is all on the throwing arm of Philip Rivers. But to get any deeper into the post-season than the last three years is directly on the legs of Ryan Mathews.
Without their star number 1 receiver to beat his man quick, and their premier Left Tackle to give Rivers more time, it’ll be up to Mathews to be enough of a threat on the ground to keep the play action pass legitimate.
A one dimensional team can make the playoffs, but in no way can get a Lombardi. I can’t help but think that Ryan Mathews might be the reason why the Chargers aren’t pursuing the two holdouts more seriously. The rookie running back might be the worst thing to happen to Jacksons and McNeils bank accounts.
The good news for the Bolts is Mathews has not just had a fantastic Training Camp, but has given life to a lifeless offensive line. Dombrowski and Clary, who are really just good backups, have stepped up their game and the chemistry on that line is strong. If Mathews can stay healthy he could be holding Rookie Of the Year honors by the end of the season.
