I reckon that the only highlight that USC had in their crosstown rivalry match with UCLA on Sunday night at the Galen Center was Harold Miner, the Trojans’ all-time scoring leader, getting his #23 jersey retired at halftime.

Outside of that, it’s safe to say that UCLA got at least a little revenge for their 50-0 humiliation in football last November as Ben Howland’s team used a 22-4 run at the end of the first half to stun the partisan Trojan crowd of 8,474 into silence, sending them to the exits early in beating them 66-47.

I think it’s also safe to say that ‘SC could have used Miner, who scored 2,048 points in his three seasons as a Trojan and was dubbed “Baby Jordan” for his acrobatic dunks, on Sunday as guard Maurice Jones was the only Trojan who had more then ten points, scoring 13.

The Bruins, who improved to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-12 Conference, achieved their largest margin of victory at the Galen Center, and it was their biggest road win in the basketball version of the Crosstown Rivalry since 1999.

USC fell to 5-13 on the season and remains winless in the conference at 0-5. “They took it to us,” Trojan coach Kevin O’Neill said.

This coming Sunday, and a few weeks later on February 15, UCLA and USC will resume their crosstown rivalry and meet on the basketball court for the 234th and 235th time.

Unlike in football, where the Trojans have historically had the advantage and continue to dominate, the Bruins have the upper hand in basketball, beating ‘SC 129 times with the Trojans winning 104 of the contests between the two schools.

In fact, with 11 national championships as opposed to USC’s one Final Four appearance in 1954 (ironically, the same year that the Bruins won their only national title on the gridiron), UCLA hoops is everything that USC football is; every bit as traditional and every bit as successful.

In fact, it is interesting to note that the basketball series predates the football one by a year, as the first meeting between these two L.A. schools happened in February 1928 with a three game series; the Bruins lost the first game 45-35 but won the next two contests between the schools that season.

A few years later in 1932, USC went on an 11-year, 42-game winning streak against their Westwood counterparts, with quite a few of those games not being close as the Bruins couldn’t catch a break. UCLA finally broke the streak in 1943, beating ‘SC 42-37 in the first of two final games of the season as for decades, the two teams would end the year against each other just like in football.

It held the NCAA record for one team beating another consecutively until 1980, and remains the third longest ever.

In 1948, a significant thing happened that changed the course of the Bruins – Trojans basketball rivalry forever: the greatest sports coach of all time, John Wooden, taking over the program at UCLA.

If the UCLA men’s basketball team clinches the Pac 12 title like the conference media members have picked them to, this weekend’s games will be circled on the calendar as the ones to set them on the right track. This weekend’s two games home away from home at the Honda center, the Bruins finally executed a winning formula. Obviously they couldn’t afford to open conference play at 0-3, so starting Thursday they resorted to playing defense. Forcing contested jumpers and not allowing layups in transition, the Wildcats shot 36% from the field. Keeping in mind they are a streaky team, [...]

UCLA Basketball May Be Back on Track With Wins at Arizona and Arizona State - The 110 Report - The 110 Report - A Los Angeles Sports Site

Keeping in mind they are a streaky team, Arizona made the Bruins’ commitment to defense look especially good. They can put the ball up a lot and miss almost as much of the time. … [visit site to read more]

When the Los Angeles Times printed the UCLA Bruins’ 2012 football schedule and I got a look at it, my reaction and feelings were that of relief.
When the Los Angeles Times printed the UCLA Bruins’ 2012 football schedule and I got a look at it, my reaction and feelings were that of relief.

Relief that for the third year in a row, the Bruins will not have to face Washington, or – thank God – Oregon, but rather Washington State and Oregon State, with the Beavers, who were even worse than UCLA last season, losing to Sacramento State of all people, coming to the Rose Bowl on September 22 in the Bruins’ Pac-12 opener.

Relief that Jim L. Mora will have a slate of games that will be more favorable than in seasons past; unlike previous years, UCLA will have some away games that are very winnable, namely Rice, who the Bruins open the season with on September 1, and Colorado, who they will face in Boulder on September 29.

California and Washington State are two other away games that UCLA can win, though with new head coach Mike Leach, the Cougars may pose a bigger challenge on the Palouse.

Now that 2011 has roughly 40 hours to go, I thought I would write what I wish for UCLA Bruin Athletics in the new year.

FOR FOOTBALL, I WISH:

- That Brett Hundley will win the job as the Bruins’ starting quarterback this spring and have a great year under center this fall, playing a big part in getting UCLA back to respectability and relevance.

- That Johnathan Franklin will return for his senior year (which he should, as he’s not ready for the NFL in my view) and stop fumbling the ball.

- That new head coach Jim L. Mora will establish a new winning culture and attitude in the program, where things like the “Over The Wall” stunt will not be tolerated and where he, unlike Rick Neuheisel, won’t have to yell, “I can’t be the only one that cares!”

- That the Bruins will sign a top ten recruiting class that can help the team right away, and…

- While I won’t state as a wish that the Bruins go undefeated – that’s too unrealistic – I will state as a wish that the Bruins win at least eight games, be a legit contender in the Pac-12 South, and be 1,000 times more competitive against USC if not outright beat them.

FOR BASKETBALL, I WISH:

- That Ben Howland’s hoopsters will continue to improve and play like a cohesive unit, as they have done since dismissing Reeves Nelson from the team.
