The State of UCLA Basketball - The 110 Report - The 110 Report - A Los Angeles Sports Site

Unlike in football, where the Trojans have historically had the advantage and continue to dominate, the Bruins have the upper hand in basketball, beating ‘SC 129 times with the Trojans winning 104 of the contests between the two schools.

In fact, with 11 national championships as opposed to USC’s one Final Four appearance in 1954 (ironically, the same year that the Bruins won their only national title on the gridiron), UCLA hoops is everything that USC football is; every bit as traditional and every bit as successful.

In fact, it is interesting to note that the basketball series predates the football one by a year, as the first meeting between these two L.A. schools happened in February 1928 with a three game series; the Bruins lost the first game 45-35 but won the next two contests between the schools that season.

A few years later in 1932, USC went on an 11-year, 42-game winning streak against their Westwood counterparts, with quite a few of those games not being close as the Bruins couldn’t catch a break.  UCLA finally broke the streak in 1943, beating ‘SC 42-37 in the first of two final games of the season as for decades, the two teams would end the year against each other just like in football.

It held the NCAA record for one team beating another consecutively until 1980, and remains the third longest ever.

In 1948, a significant thing happened that changed the course of the Bruins – Trojans basketball rivalry forever: the greatest sports coach of all time, John Wooden, taking over the program at UCLA.

 OK, so UCLA’s marquee sports program, its men’s basketball team – winners of 11 national championships and once the coaching domain of the greatest man to ever wear a whistle, John Wooden – isn’t doing so hot right now.

Their center is very overweight, very much out of shape, can barely log in 15 minutes on the floor, and often gets into foul trouble when he is playing.

What Is REALLY Wrong With UCLA Basketball - The 110 Report - The 110 Report - A Los Angeles Sports Site

Deep down, I knew this was going to happen. Especially after USC battered and humiliated the UCLA Bruins at the Coliseum, giving them their worst conference loss ever.

Before that beat down, I thought that Rick Neuheisel would be allowed to return for the last year of his five-year contract because, technically, his team won more games than in 2010 and became bowl eligible.

Add to that my conviction that UCLA, in the midst of a state budget crisis, wouldn’t be able to afford to buy out Neuheisel and his staff.

All of those convictions were thrown out the window after that 50-0 butchering. As much as it hurt, because I like the guy, I was done with Neuheisel at that point and was convinced that a change had to be made.

It was crystal clear that Bruin Athletic Director Dan Guerrero felt the same way, that the beat down at the hands of the crosstown rival Trojans was the last straw as he made it official by firing the UCLA football coach two days after Bruin Nation was thoroughly embarrassed.

Many fans in Westwood are shouting “Hallelujah!” at the news. Even though I knew it had to happen, as I realized once and for all that the Bruins would never reach their potential as Pac-12 and national contenders with Neuheisel as coach, my feelings are not the same as the many UCLA fans and alumni who were calling for Rick’s head for the past two years.
